Volunteering It should also be fun!

In life all we can do is give children the best opportunity to become good adults, the rest is up to them. If we as Adults don't help and just sit at home saying look at the problems with children today, then we need to look at how much we do as Adults in helping them in their development.

At Scouting we aim to help children develop and we need Adults to help to run the sections, if you would like to help then please visit our Scout hut on a Thursday between 8:00pm and 9:00pm to discuss what you can do to help. See map

Volunteers can do almost anything!  From helping in the background or help run one of the section, volunteers make a vital contribution to all aspects of Scouting life.  Volunteering also brings benefits to the individuals involved, it may simply be a way to have fun and meet new people but it can also be a great way to gain to some valuable new skills.

An increasing number of volunteers are supported in their volunteering by their employers both in and out of office hours. Why not find out whether your employer runs an employee volunteering scheme and ask how you can get involved. We can arrange for volunteers to help between 9:00 am and 5:00pm carrying out building maintenance work or preparation work for the nights Scouting programmes etc.

Volunteering is simple. It's about giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid. In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent. In addition, volunteering can be a great way to:
  • meet new people
  • learn new skills
  • gain useful experience.

It should also be fun!

The range of opportunities is huge. Whatever skills and experience you have, there is something that you can do. The best way to see what is available is to visit our Scout Hut (See map ) on a Thursday night between 8:00pm and 9:00pm

The biggest problem for many people is finding the time to volunteer. It can reduce your choices if you don't have much time to spare, but many busy people do find suitable opportunities. Again, we can look at the different times we have meetings and see what's on offer.

Once you start volunteering you should usually expect:

  • a clear idea of what your role will be
  • appropriate training and support

If you aren't clear about anything, don't be afraid to ask someone. If you need further assistance try the Scouts web site http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/support/index.htm for a list of the different roles within Scouting.

At 1st Upton-by-Chester we have children from the age of 6 to 18 and have about a 100 members within our Group, so we always welcome more help to make Scouting more fun.

Why Volunteer from the GM TV web site

  1. Build confidence and self-esteem
It can help you to build your confidence and self-esteem as you realise abilities you didn't know you had, for example, leadership skills that have never been put to the test.
  2.  Make a difference
The list is endless - mentor a young person who has turned to crime, befriend an elderly person who's confined to a home or help teach life skills to a homeless person.
  3. New opportunities and challenges
Try something you've never done before and you never know you might just like it and find you're good at it!
  4. Improve career opportunities and employability
Did you know that 73% of employers would employ candidates with volunteering experience over one who doesn't? Volunteering can enhance your employability. 94% of employees who volunteered to learn new skills had benefited either by getting their first job, improving their salary, or being promoted.
  5. Make new friends
You'll meet like-minded people who could become friends for life.
  6. Be part of a community
You'll feel a real part of it as well as knowing that you're helping to change it. It's also fun, exciting and fulfilling.
  7. Be of monetary value to struggling charities
  8. Without volunteers organisations and charities such as Scouting would not have the resources to run many of their projects.
